Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler

Police detectives Arthur Bryant and John May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit, have been partners for decades.  When Bryant is blown up in an explosion at headquarters, May is reminded of the day the detectives first met as young men.   The novel flashes back to the London Blitz and the duo’s first case involving murders in the Palace Theatre.  The compelling dynamic between the partners, the dark drama and the black humor make this an engrossing start for the Peculiar Crimes Unit series.
