Help Save Sea Turtles!
Steven Abbondondelo of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation will talk about cold stunning of sea turtles and how volunteers can help. Cold stunning is a condition similar to hypothermia that affects cold-blooded sea turtles in water temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Sea turtles inhabit New York waters during the summer and fall before heading south to safe, warmer waters. Cold stunning slows the movements of afflicted sea turtles and causes the animals to get washed ashore on our beaches. This condition can become fatal. Come learn about you might help increase the chances for survival of these vulnerable animals.
